Have you ever been swimming at the beach and felt the strong push and pull of the water?
Let’s talk about rip currents!
Rips can change shape and location really quickly and may be difficult to see. They can hide very well and can be hard to see from where you’re standing down on the sand.
Would you know what to do if you were caught in a rip?
Here are three tips:
- Try and stay calm, float on your back and raise an arm to attract attention.
- While you’re floating, the rip current may flow in a circular pattern and return you to an
sandbar where you can stand. - You may escape the rip current by swimming sideways (parallel to the beach), towards the
breaking waves.
